CHAPTER 1

“Jack?” I peep as I lean my head through the slightly ajar door.

“Who’s that?” a deep voice bellows.

“Sophia,” I say, stepping nervously inside. “I have an interview today?”

“Ah, Sophia. Take a seat.”

Jack motions to the chair in front of his desk. He glances at me briefly before picking up a piece of paper on his desk and skimming it.

“It’s Sir, unless I tell you otherwise. Understood?”

His light blue eyes glance up briefly from the paper, and when we make eye contact, I feel a bolt of lightning rush through my body. It frazzles me, pushing me temporarily off balance.

“G-got it,” I stammer. What is this guy’s problem?

“So, Sophia,” he says, his voice vaguely laced with distaste, “I just had a look at your resume and I see zero forestry experience. Why should I hire you?”

“Um,” I take a deep breath and smooth my sweaty palms on my plaid skirt. My uncle Dominick who set me up with this job told me that Jack was a bit of a hardass, but holy shit, I’d never expected it to be this bad.

I wrack my mind, desperately trying to come up with something. Anything, really.

“I like the outdoors?” I finally muster, pasting on a half smile.

Jack laughs unkindly. “Don’t bullshit me, Sophia, or I’ll have to wash that lying little mouth of yours out with soap.”

My eyes grow wide as a combination of horror and fascination floods my body. What the hell did he just say? As surprised as I am about Jack’s lack of manners, I’m even more surprised at my body’s reaction to him. Instead of being outraged by his condescending remark, I feel a little … nervous? Excited? It’s hard to put a finger on it exactly, but I have that fluttery kind of feeling you get when you’re at the top of the roller coaster or before you’re about to kiss someone for the first time.

He holds my gaze for a second, his stoic face unflinching. I feel like I might throw up.

Just when I’m about to leave, he bursts out laughing.

“I’m just playing with you. Don’t take yourself so seriously, Sophie.”

I grit my teeth. I hate it when people call me Sophie.

“It’s Sophia,” I say.

He ignores me and keeps talking.

“We both know the only reason that you’re sitting in front of me right now is Dominick. So let’s cut the crap and be straight with each other. Alright?”

A small wave of relief washes over me.

“Okay,” I reply, nodding.

“I know you have no experience in the forestry industry. Dominick told me that much.”

Then why did you ask me that question, asshole? I think to myself. I purse my pink glossed lips, though, and keep my annoyance to myself.

“That’s not a problem,” Jack continues. “I can train you like I’ve trained all my workers. The only thing I need to know is whether you can take orders. Are you obedient, Sophie?”

Obedient? What a strange choice of words. My stomach twists and I feel something flutter in between my legs.
